What is this community about?

There will be daily prompts for which you have 2 days to submit an icon after signing up. The main goal is to finish 100 icons in a year, so you don't have to respond to every single prompt posted.

You have the choice between signing up for a general theme (everything goes) or a more specific topic if you want to challenge yourself a bit more.

RULES
• Icons should be new.
• Icons should be suitable for use on Dreamwidth (.GIF, .JPG, or .PNG; no larger than 100x100 pixels; file size up to 60kb. FAQ Link)
• Prompts will be available for two days, meaning there are always two prompts available.
(e.g. Prompt 3 gets posted, Prompt 2 is still open while Prompt 1 gets closed)

SIGN UPS
• You can sign up for a "general" theme were you're not limited by anything or something more specific (e.g. Doctor Who, Hermione Granger, Nature, Hugh Laurie, Fantasy movies, etc.)
• You can sign up for the following table sizes:
    • 10 icons in 1 month
    • 25 icons in 3 month
    • 50 icons in 6 month
    • 100 icons in 1 year
• You may sign up for up to 3 different table sizes / claims at a time

FAQ
What does a unique table/theme mean?
• You can sign up for the same claim with different table sizes. E.g. 25 Doctor Who (general) and 50 Doctor Who (general).
• You can sign up for the same table size with different claims several times. E.g. 25 Doctor Who (general) and 25 Doctor Who (The Doctor).

What kind of themes can be claimed?
Anything goes really! You can claim as broad or narrow a theme as you want. This can be fandom related (any fandom, any genre goes!), celebs, nature, stock, sports or anything you want to really. You can also go wide open by using a general claim without any specifications.

You can narrow it down to specific characters/people, pairings or episodes or go as wide as claiming a group of things. Anything in between works as well.
E.g. Emma Watson, young!Amy Pond, Sherlock (BBC) Episode 1x01 A Study in Pink, Superhero movies, TV Dramas, Male Celebs, Stock, Text, etc.

What's the difference between the table sizes?
Aside from the obvious (that you have to make a different amount of icons), the time you have to complete a table is different. For 10 icons you have 1 month to finish while you have an entire year to finish 100 icons.

Can I get an extension?
Sure, just leave a comment in the sign up post and let me know how much time you'll likely need. I usually don't check due dates anyway - they're mostly there for everyone to keep themselves in check. It also gives me a time frame for when prompts may repeat to avoid any repeats happening within a given time frame for a claim.

When are new prompts posted?
I typically try to post a new prompt between 8pm and 9pm German time (current German time). With real life and even distractedness being what they are, posts may be late up to midnight.
In case I know I'm unlikely to have time/opportunity to post upcoming prompts, I will post prompts ahead of time in a single post and keep all of them open until the next regular prompt is posted (while keeping two prompt posts open). Meaning these prompts may be open for longer than 48 hours.

I am new to icon making, I got the bug on Snowflake Challenge this year. I don't know where else to ask this, so I am trying it here (feel free to delete if inappropriate): What is the etiquette for using fanart for icons? Do I need permission from the artist? Do I just drop them a line, or is credit in the poszting enough? What about random pictures I find5 online, can I just use them? I really have no clue^^

I have never used fanart for making icons so I've never been in the position where I had to think about it, but I think that artists would probably prefer to be asked first (unless they have a transformative statement somewhere - I learned about that through the snowflake challenge).

That's no problem! Questions are always good :)

In the beginning I used random google images and I noted that in my resource post, but for the most part I note down where I took images from. Whether that's linking someone who makes screencaps, a fan page for specific celebreties or stock images. When it's websites instead of blog like places like dreamwidth, I typically only credit the page itself and not individual users though.

Giving credit in this case is like word of mouth advertisement and if someone gave me resource for free, I figure it's the least I can do in exchange. In regards to other images, like stock images (per my definition: anything not fandom related - food, animals, nature, etc) there might actually be copyright issues involved. So be sure to check if there are any statements to that regard. The latter might be more on my mind as I once took a class on media law that involved things like that, but that was more about professional uses instead of fandom cases.

I hope I got my point across as I somehow got a bit distracted with where I was going with my reply.

Hi folks! I am so excited to see this comm back up and running after all this time!

As a suggestion, you might want to change the dates on the sticky posts if you can? They push the more recent posts down on the page and at a glance make it look like the comm is still languishing.

This might be a tiny bit random, but do you mind if I use the coding for the tables outside this comm? I've been making a few icons other than what I signed up for here, and I am having a hard time finding a table generator that I really like so far. I can credit if you'd like :-)

Feel free to use them as you want, no credit necessary. I've kind of gotten accustomed to copy and pasting them myself for whenever I want to post icons I didn't make for dailyicons and I know that I like the way they look after having played around with it long enough :)

The tables are GREAT, look GREAT, and they're easy to use. I tried playing with some generators but never could get the results as great looking as these.

I know I'm WAY past the deadline at this point, but would you mind me still using the daily prompts to finish my stargate table? Not to include in the hall of fame or anything like that. I just wanted to fill in the rest of the table before moving on to a new claim if that's okay?

I have no problem giving you an extension. I personally treat the deadline more as a (rough) guarantee for posting unique prompts and avoiding duplicate ones.

Do you want to start the count over from the beginning (with the icons already made counting towards the target amount)? And feel free to still submit to the hall of fame. Sometimes life just happens and completing something should still be counted as a success :)

Not a question but a comment...

I am SO VERY GLAD that I joined this comm as making the icons I've made here has give me the confidence I needed to take part in other comms that have voting by members, I mean last year I actually tied for best crop in a challenge over at iconthat, and I don't think that would've happened if I had picked up icon making again here! So thank you for running this comm every day that you do! :-)

Another question: Is there a special code you want us to use when signing up? I saw there is none in the entry.

There isn't a special code to sign up. As long as the comment contains the table size and claim, I'm happy to figure out the rest. The user name tends to be obvious from the comment. Optionally, you can add if you post to a community (and I will list both) and a link if you set up a post that you update as you go along.

In the past I've gotten a mixture of people writing it in a sentence and others formatting it to clearly say what is the user name, table size and claim.

I have a question:

If I sign up for an actor - can I icon more than one movie with said actor? Or can I only go with private stuff the actor did (like interviews)?

You can icon anything regarding that actor from interviews to photo shoots, Behind the Scenes footage to any of their roles (or whatever else I might not have thought of for this example list). Whatever fits the prompt. :)

When I sign up today - is it possible to have it done until December 31 instead of December 30? It's easier for me to have both of my claims ending on the same day.

If the icons have to be new when we post them in reply to the community entries, may we then post them to other communities such as fandom icon communities, etc., where icons new to them are accepted?
